OUR APPROACH

Every three minutes a child is born with cleft — often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile. In some places these children are shunned and rejected. And in too many cases, their parents can’t afford the surgeries they need to live a normal life.

That’s where Smile Asia comes in, providing much needed medical services.
Smile Asia is a global alliance of charities working together to treat facial deformities like cleft lip and cleft palate. We aim to raise standards of medical care by creating opportunities of collaborative learning and exchange of best practices.

We deliver free surgical care through medical missions and outreach centres. These initiatives build trust and bridge cultures among different communities.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Our objectives are achieved through the following programmes.

MEDICAL MISSION
Deliver surgical care and provide knowledge-sharing platforms by organising medical missions involving multi-country participants.

OUTREACH CENTRE
Deliver surgical care and provide knowledge-sharing platforms by extensive use of local infrastructure and proficiencies involving multi-country participants.

VOLUNTEERING & AWARENESS
Instil a sense of volunteerism among healthcare and allied professionals by encouraging them to join medical missions.

TRAINING & EDUCATION
Organise specialised training and education programmes for healthcare and allied professionals.

STUDENT INITIATIVE
Encourage volunteerism and provide leadership development opportunities to the student community.

SINGAPORE CARE*
Post-operative care for Singapore-based children, inclusive of research and infrastructure development.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

Training is the cornerstone of who we are. It’s the only way to ensure that every child receives quality medical care every time, everywhere they receive surgery. Our goal is to move towards sustainable treatment programmes conducted at the local level.

Through our education initiatives, medical volunteers are given specialised skills to treat children with facial deformities — in doing this, we extend our impact beyond simply delivering treatments in the field.

MISSION-BASED EDUCATION

Our medical missions restore smiles to children and provide learning opportunities for our volunteers. We deliver training during each of our medical missions, ranging from formal medical conferences to informal workshops on specific skills or techniques.

Certain team members are selected to engage in this educational role, which they perform before, during and/or after the surgical mission. At times, the team may include guest educators who are internationally recognised in their fields. These educational programmes are designed to meet the training needs of the healthcare facilities and professionals in the mission site.
