THE LITTLE LION OF TIBET

GARZÊ, CHINA | OCTOBER 2021

With a head full of bouncy curls and eyes that sparkled, this little girl radiated joy wherever she went. Outgoing and fearless, she never let her cleft lip dim her bright spirit. Her cheerful nature quickly earned her the nickname “Little Lion” from the Smile Asia volunteers.

Born and raised in Tibet, Little Lion stood out from many city children. She was strong and resilient, hardly flinching even when receiving injections. She found comfort in the steady presence of her father, much like a lion cub clinging affectionately to its protector.

Her father’s love for his children was unwavering, though life had not been easy. As the sole breadwinner caring for seven children, he carried the immense responsibility of providing for them all. Their hardships deepened after the loss of his wife a year ago. In the wake of her passing, one of his elder daughters gave up her education to manage the household and care for her younger siblings. Despite these struggles, their strong family bond and deep love for one another gave them the courage to endure each day.

After a successful cleft surgery, Little Lion’s smile now shines brighter than ever. Her father expressed immense gratitude, saying that this transformation means his daughter can grow up with greater opportunities. With her courage, resilience, and the love of her family, Little Lion will continue to glow and thrive.
